Sustainability today has become biggest challenge in last decade. In apparel and fashion industry sustainability has become a hot topic. In next or upcoming decade it is assumed that consumption of water resources will increase by 50%. Doesn’t it seem wastage!!
If consumers don’t change their fashion habits the situation can become even worse. After showing some strict measures by fashion industry on the topic of sustainability, they have come up with new innovative ways to work over it. Concept of best from waste or zero wastage has become very popular due to SDGS.
There are certain major points to make fashion industry more sustainable:
- Concept of Second Hand Shopping:
Many brands and retailers have had moved towards second hand shopping and to redevelop or redesign old boring or wasted garments. Certain brands like Levis, Gas, Jack & Jones have come up with concept to exchange new garments with old ones for recycling or redesign and provide customer with certain exchange bonuses.
- Customized Clothing:
It is a very old form of designing garments and makes it tailor made or make to order for the customers. Many consumers have started liking bespoke fashion i.e. tailor made or customized clothing as it is considered very unique, fashionable and with amazing fits.
Also the brands and retailers are customizing the shopping experience to get closer to the customers. Personalized clothing is today’s choice of many customers. Many brands and designers have taken steps to improve customized shopping experience for customers. Eco friendly or recycle lover customers are choosing majorly customized clothing over mass production to save natural resources and natural raw materials.
- Ethical/fair Fashion:
The fashion industry has always been distressful for labors (man power), animals and earth (environment). Ethical and fair fashion both runs parallel to each other. Consumers have started choosing ethical and fair fashion nowadays.
Many brands have started working to provides ethical and cruelty (especially animal) free fashion. Brands and retailers are accepting many policies that state no cruelty with animal, nature and labor or human rights during the product manufacturing. They are now promoting more of eco friendliness, traditional crafts (to empower backward areas) and rights reserved (animal and manpower). Government and NGOs have helped such retailers by providing policies and norms for sustainable fashion. Many demos or seminars are conducted by government or NGOs to encourage sustainability in fashion and to reach goals.
- Repair, Redesign and Recycle Fashion:
Many brands and companies are accepting and making aware about 5 R s of fashion i.e. reduce, repair, recycle, repurpose and reinvent.
Repair facilities have been ensured by certain brands to make customer purchase long-lasting.
Redesigning is always beyond repair. Garments that cannot be repaired in anyway can be redesigned or recycled (reused) by the brand. Redesigning old garments to new is the new fashion today. By this industry can preserve or save natural resources and raw materials. Certain fashion waste is used to up cycle to create new fashionable products. Without recycling also new cloths are developed or designed.
- Clean & Green fashion:
Fashion industry is in the list of most polluting industries on the planet. Certain industries have taken initiative to give clean and green production strategy.
Many brands have introduced like organic cotton, use of natural dyes and traditional crafts gives it an eco-friendly feel too. Brands and customers are parallel accepting the concept of sustainable fashion.
